An Tran is a performer, collaborator, and teacher based in the Kansas City area.
Hailing from Lincoln, Nebraska, An began studying violin at the age of 9 as part of the Lincoln Public Schools elementary strings program. She graduated with her Master of Music in Violin Performance at the University of Colorado Boulder studying with Claude Sim and graduated with high distinction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, completing a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Mathematics studying violin with David Neely and viola with Clark Potter and Jonah Sirota. Other former teachers include Anne Nagosky, Mary Roseberry-Brown, and Shirley Harrison.
Currently, An performs as a freelancer in the Kansas City area, performing for weddings, receptions, religious services, and large ensembles. She is also a substitute violinist for the Kansas City Symphony and has subbed with the Colorado Symphony. During her studies in Boulder, An performed with the Boulder Symphony, CU Symphony, CU Chamber Orchestra, and CU Opera Orchestra. She has previously served as concertmaster of the UNL Symphony, as principal second violin of the UNL Philharmonia, as a substitute violinist with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, and as an Orchestra Fellow with Texas Music Festival.
During her undergraduate studies, An was a founding member of the Amore String Quartet, studying performance and teaching artistry with the Chiara String Quartet. In 2018-2019, the Amore String Quartet won the State and Division rounds of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Chamber Music String competition and received honorable mention at the National competition. She also participated in the Chamber Music Program at CU, learning from Meta Weiss and members of the Takacs Quartet. In the summer of 2018, An was a participant in Bay View Music Festival’s String Quartet Intensive. An has performed in masterclasses with Shanghai Quartet, Miles Hoffman and the American Chamber Players, Stephanie Jeong, Renee Jolles, Attacca Quartet, Diane Nicholeris, Chiara Quartet, Peter Otto, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, Tesla Quartet, and Sibbi Bernhardsson.
As a teacher, An has maintained a private studio since 2018. An completed Suzuki Unit One training at the Nashville Suzuki Institute in 2019 with Joanne Melvin. From 2018-2019, An was a violin-teaching intern at Nissa’s String Studio in Lincoln, Nebraska, teaching students, substituting for other teachers, and assisting with administrative tasks. She also previously taught at Fiddlestick Music from 2017-2018, at Bay View Music Festival in 2018, and was a teaching assistant for the undergraduate orchestral excerpts class at CU. She currently teaches privately in Overland Park, Kansas and coaches high school sectionals in the Blue Valley School District, Shawnee Mission School District, and Spring Hill School District.
